O’Brien Counseling Services, Inc. offers an anger management treatment program which revolves around the central treatment goal of improving one’s life skills. Philosophically, O’Brien Counseling
Services, Inc. views the failure to control one’s anger as a behavioral problem. The development of internal management, or self-control, and taking responsibility for one’s own behavior is an underlying
theme in all of our work. The treatment interventions that we use are based on cognitive-behavioral, reality-oriented theories. Learning adaptive pro-social coping skills, geared toward breaking their aggressive patterns, is further
stressed as part of the therapeutic process. After an initial assessment, which includes, but is not limited to: a clinical interview, the primary modality used is weekly classes. These classes are conducted by at least one master’s level counselor, and meet for two hours each week. Anger Management groups are a combination of teaching new
behavioral concepts and re-enforcing those concepts with group interactions. Ideally, each group consists of eight to ten clients. These groups are very structured, directive, and confrontational,
holding the clients accountable for their actions. Individual and family therapy is provided as needed. These additional services offer support and education to family members of persons who have
difficulty controlling their anger.
Once the required 6 – 10 sessions have been completed, clients will have a follow-up interview to assess
their progress. Clients are always welcome to attend both more individual sessions and/ or classes, once their required classes have been completed.
O’Brien Counseling Services, Inc. counselors work closely with probation officers to help clients learn to accept responsibility for their behaviors, break their aggressive behavioral patterns, and develop victim empathy, always working toward the goal of helping the client become a responsible citizen.
